Years 1968-1969
The Cultural Revolution began in summer of 1966, Solid State Theory Laboratory and Magnetism Theoretical Research Group were forced to disband in 1968-1969 and all members were relocated to other laboratories. During that difficult period, they still worked diligently in their respective fields to do some meaningful research. For example, Prof. YinYuan Li led the lithium iodate research in the Crystal Laboratory; Professors Fuke Pu, Bailin Hao, Kean Feng and Jundao Cai worked on the theory and calculation of small antenna; others like Professors Guozhen Yang, Yuping Huo, Benyuan Gu from the Laser Laboratory also achieved good results, etc.
Year 1972
In 1972, it was a turning point for scientists as fundamental research regained social attention, and therefore research environment became relatively easy. A new group, Theory and Computation Research Group, was formed by the former members of Solid State Theory Laboratory and Magnetism Theoretical Research Group. The group members included Professors Fuke Pu, Bailin Hao, Lu Yu, Juelian Shen, Dingsheng Wang, Jundao Cai, Kean Feng, Fumin Dong, Kehong Chu, Yingshu Jin, Kexi Bi, Xiuying Liu, etc.
The major research works during that period included renormalization group theory of critical phenomenon, the statistical model for phase transitions, the excitation of magnetic spin-wave, the statistical analysis and prediction of seismic activity, etc. In the mean time, computational research began to be carried out in parallel with the theoretical research.
Year 1975
A high-level delegation organized by American Physical Society visited China in 1975, and the delegates included Nobel Prize winners, such as Bardeen, Schrieffer, Bloom, etc. They appraised the research results of phase transitions and critical phenomenon.
In the brief introduction of the Institute of physics in 1972, it was proposed that basic theoretical research should be paid attention to

In January 1979, it was decided to set up a theoretical research group
In February 1979, the establishment of the theoretical research group was announced again
